Cool riffs and awesome vocals. Pounding drums and lyrics about horror movies. With their sophomore full-length, "Those of the Morbid", LEPER COLONOY deliver exactly what any adherent of classic death metal craves. This is hardly a surprise, given the scene icons behind this international act: LEPER COLONY came out of the wedding of German and Swedish death metal styles with classic American influences. This happened, when German vocalist Marc Grewe and Swedish guitarist Rogga Johansson decided to expand their friendship of many years and mutual love for old school death metal into creating an album together in 2020. The duo enlisted CONSUMPTION drummer Jon Skäre and lead-guitarist Kjetil Lyngahug (PAGANIZER) to record their self-titled debut album, which was released in 2023. The record was well received by critics and fans alike as it was obviously not just another 'super project', but a congregation of die-hard death metal fanatics coming up with a host of fresh ideas. German vocalist Marc Grewe has long-established his name as the former frontman of MORGOTH, and later with INSIDIOUS DISEASE as well as with the band ASINHELL. Guitarist and bass player Rogga Johansson has left a massive mark on Swedish death metal in a host of bands including PAGANIZER, RIBSPREADER, and REVOLTING. WOMBBATH guitarist Håkan Stuvemark has taken over lead guitar as a new member and he was joined by British drummer Jon Rudin, who is well-known from MONSTROUS and DEAD SUN among several other death metal acts. With "Those of the Morbid", LEPER COLONOY give old school death metal fanatics the very brutal and uncompromising album that they have been waiting for!
Death metal can hardly get more dedicated and passionate about the old school Floridian sound than TEMPLE OF DREAD on their fifth album "God of the Godless". Luckily, the East Frisians from German island Spiekeroog are not mired in a swamp of stale nostalgia. Although "God of the Godless" comes with the brutal power of harsh winter storms and the gritty texture of the often fierce North Sea weather, the East Frisians have also refined the cinematic aspects of their sound that they had firmly established on the predecessor "Beyond Acheron" (2023). Building on their brutal death metal base, TEMPLE OF DREAD also work with dark and heavy parts as well as a surprising dash of melancholia – and even some knife-tips of black metal spice. There is even a return of a guest-contribution by former MORGOTH, INSIDIOUS DISEASE, and ASINHELL vocalist Marc Grewe. The massive production of "God of the Godless" comes courtesy of drummer Jörg Uken, who owns and runs the renowned death metal smithy Soundlodge Tonstudio, in which leading acts of the scene such as DEW-SCENTED, GOD DETHRONED, OBSCENITY, SUICIDAL ANGELS, and WARPATH among many others have also recorded albums. TEMPLE OF DREAD came into being on Spiekeroog in 2017 when guitarist Markus Bünnemeyer decided to materialise his craving for old school death metal. In 2018, he was joined by singer Jens Finger and drummer Jörg Uken, with both of whom Bünnemeyer was also active in SLAUGHTERDAY. The three-piece has maintained a stable line-up ever since. Their first full-length "Blood Craving Mantras" (2019) was an immediate success in death metal circles and the hard working trio has proved extremely creative with "World Sacrifice" (2020) and the critically acclaimed "Hades Unleashed" (2021) following in rapid succession. While "Beyond Acheron" (2023) took a little longer, TEMPLE OF DREAD are now back on the fast track. Even better, the East Frisians have decided that it is time to leave their island and go raiding the rest of the world by performing live. With "God of the Godless", TEMPLE OF DREAD are again pushing the benchmark for intelligent death metal brutality to an even higher level!
Slightly shorter tracks, fast forward blast beats, and their characteristic doom-driven passages all add up to a contemporary version of classic death metal that will cement the German's status as one of the hottest young acts of this most brutal genre. CARNAL TOMB took inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft as well as gore and zombie movies such as Amando de Ossorio's 1972 genre classic "Tombs of the Blind Dead", and old Italian funeral places called 'putridarium', in which the corpses of the deceased were left to rot. These themes have also inspired the morbid cover artwork of "Embalmed in Decay" by the artist Skaðvaldur. CARNAL TOMB were formed in Berlin in 2014 out of a hunger for old school death metal that possessed all band members. Besides a remarkable number of demo recordings, EPs, split and single releases, their two full-lengths "Rotten Remains" (2016) and "Abhorrent Veneration" (2019) earned the band an excellent reputation in death metal circles around the globe. With the putrid death metal horror of "Embalmed in Decay", CARNAL TOMB raise the blind dead from their tombs and unleash these monsters and other brutal evils upon an unsuspecting world.
At the same time, the East Frisians have added more dark and heavy parts as well as a healthy dash of melancholic feeling – and even black metal inspired moments. Guest-contributions by former MORGOTH and INSIDIOUS DISEASE vocalist Marc Grewe and GOD DETHRONED's Henri Sattler add a spicy extra. Lyrically, the band's friend and word-smith, psychologist Frank Albers, has again delivered intelligent gory texts that revolve around antique myth and history featuring protagonists such as Icarus, Vulcan, Hades, Cleopatra, and Marcus Antonius. This is also reflected in the cover artwork of "Beyond Acheron", which has been created by celebrated Italian artist Paolo Girardi and depicts Charon, the ferryman of the Greek underworld Hades. The massive production of "Beyond Acheron" comes courtesy of TEMPLE OF DREAD drummer Jörg Uken and his Soundlodge Tonstudio, where among many other acts DEW-SCENTED, GOD DETHRONED, OBSCENITY, SUICIDAL ANGELS, and WARPATH have previously recorded albums. TEMPLE OF DREAD were conceived by guitarist Markus Bünnemeyer on Spiekeroog in 2017 as an outlet for his old school death metal ambitions. In 2018, he was joined by singer Jens Finger and drummer Jörg Uken, with both of whom Bünnemeyer was also active in Slaughterday. It took only another year until the first full-length "Blood Craving Mantras" (2019) hit the scene hard and the trio proved extremely creative with two more albums following in rapid succession: "World Sacrifice" (2020) and the critically acclaimed "Hades Unleashed" only one year later in 2021.
Here comes the German death metal tank again, crushing and smashing, bulldozing all resistance into oblivion and breaking through the lines. SCALPTURE deliver their fourth album "Landkrieg", which means 'land warfare' in German, with deadly precision and an ambitious mission statement: to conquer the world. This time, it is not just one of the usual war themes, but each song on "Landkrieg" revolves around the 30 Year War that devastated the German lands from 1618 until 1648. On "Landkrieg", SCALPTURE stay true to their deadly roots, but their sound has been refined by endless hours on the road, playing more shows, and many days and nights well spent in the rehearsing space and at Hellforge Studio. The new songs are brutal, hard-hitting, and 100% death metal, but they also leave room for variety and cool twists. When SCALPTURE came into being in the German city of Bielefeld in 2009, founding guitarist Felix Marbach already had a clear vision: The musical direction was to be death metal without any compromise regarding its roots and values, but at the same time the band aimed to evolve into a singular musical entity with a unique style very much their own right from the start. It is hardly surprising that all SCALPTURE's album titles refer to the topic of 'war' that the band has decided to adopt as their prime lyrical theme. Staying away from glorifying stereotypes, their texts are built on detailed historical research and portray the horrors that the abyss of war has caused in some of the darkest hours of humankind. Although the Germans have chosen war as their main subject, SCALPTURE embrace modern values such as tolerance, peace, and reason. SCALPTURE unleash a new "Landkrieg" and that leaves the world with only two choices: run for cover or bang that death metal head hard!
On "Veins of Fire", DESERTED FEAR have again driven their songwriting, sound, and musical prowess into new territories. While remaining true to their trademarks, riffing and melodies yet also the drumming have been given an update, while vocalist Manuel "Mahne" Glatter extended his range even further. The lyrics on "Veins of Fire" reveal DESERTED FEAR as a band very much concerned and engaged with the most relevant contemporary issues without any urge to preach or to demand conformity. The songs on this album reflect a world full of insecurity, injustice, and growing divisions. The rise of death metal trio DESERTED FEAR is both remarkable and thrilling. When the band was founded in the most appropriately named Thuringian city of Eisenberg (Iron Mountain), guitarist and vocalist Manuel "Mahne" Glatter, guitarist and main songwriter as well as producer Fabian Hildebrandt, and drummer Simon Mengs did probably not anticipate to end up at the forefront of the German scene. Their debut album "My Empire", which was produced by Swedish legend Dan Swanö, hit the death metal crowd hard in 2012. DESERTED FEAR's beastly force, thunderous riffs, pummelling drums, and blood-curdling vocals with an uncanny knack for captivating melodies became immediately apparent. With each new album, the balance shifted steadily to the melodic side, yet the band never lost its vicious bite. "Kingdom of Worms" (2014), "Dead Shores Rising" (2017), "Drowned by Humanity" (2019), and "Doomsday" (2022) all turned out as impressive milestones of DESERTED FEAR's still upward moving career. With "Veins of Fire", DESERTED FEAR open a new chapter in their impressive musical career. Although the respect for their deep death metal roots remains easily audible, the levels of confidence and mastery displayed in the songwriting as well as an avalanche of hooks take "Veins of Fire" up on a new level.
From crushing doom-ridden ultra-heavy parts to calculated outbreaks of utter brutality, this record offers everything a still beating death metal heart could ask for. And of course, those cosmic horrors of the Great Old Ones, forbidden sounds, and tentacled death metal are still rising. The German band has also added more deeper meaning to their tales of cosmic terrors as a healthy antidote to stereotypes. Lyrically, SLAUGHTERDAY have always built on the well-established foundations of their genre by taking inspiration from American author H. P. Lovecraft and other masters of horror. And while sinister things crawl and creep through the duo's timeless brutality, they have always portrayed them with a sinister flair of their own. These days, the band has repurposed those monstrous creatures as metaphorical ciphers for relevant contemporary topics. SLAUGHTERDAY present new horrors and more brutal madness than ever that make "Dread Emperor" essential listening for any self-respecting old school death metal afficionado!
Six years after their acclaimed studio full-length "Merciless Savagery" (2019), the Dutch death dealers return with their most brutal and dark record so far that is aptly entitled "Devoid of Light". When ANTROPOMORPHIA created "Devoid of Light" over a period of two and a half years, they never lost sight of their vision: to combine a wide variety of harsh musical textures including fanatical, white-eyed aggression, misanthropic and nihilistic lyrics, and dark emotions such as anger, despair, and pain among many others into dark and oppressive soundscapes. ANTROPOMORPHIA were originally spawned from the foul stench of death in the Dutch city of Tilburg in 1990. At the time, they were pioneers, which soon turned them into a corner stone of the brutal music scene in the Netherlands. Despite the occasional hiatus, ANTROPOMORPHIA continuously cemented their status as underground icons with a string of acclaimed releases. Their uncompromising approach and ever expanding vortex of musical textures has brought a continuously growing influx of black metal elements into the musical and visual DNA of the Dutch. Now ANTROPOMORPHIA are returning with "Devoid of Light" to show the world that they are still hungry to push the limits of the death metal scene to new frontiers. Crank the volume up to 10 and let this album rip!
SODOMISERY are spinning a dark lyrical yarn about mental illness in society, religion and the struggle of the individual on their sophomore full-length "Mazzaroth. The Swedish melodic death four-piece are underlining their loosely conceptual approach with a remarkable musical evolution that expands their original sound based on the power and precision of death metal with the frenzied and cold aggression of black metal. SODOMISERY have added a layer of dramatic depth by including keyboards, which is hardly surprising as the Swedes count DIMMU BORGIR, CRADLE OF FILTH, and CHILDREN OF BODOM among their major sources of inspiration. SODOMISERY were born out of a studio project originally envisioned by Stockholm based guitarist Harris Sopovic in 2015, who enlisted the help of NETHERBIRD frontman Johan Fridell, bass player Niklas Sandin (KATATONIA, LIK) and drummer Pär Johansson, who is best known for his work with CRAFT and DIABOLICAL. This resulted in the eponymous 3-track EP "Sodomisery” which was digitally released in 2017. When the EP was heaped with massive praise, Sopovic recruited new members and decided to continue the band under the name SODOMISERY. Their debut album "The Great Demise" (2020) can be viewed as a deliberate statement of intent, not to blindly follow in the giant but also somewhat worn out footprints of the legendary Stockholm death metal scene. Instead, these Swedish newcomers favoured a more melodic and versatile approach. In the period from their inception to the forthcoming second album, SODOMISERY have progressed by leaps and bounds and "Mazzaroth" is the audible proof of this bold statement!
The German death dealers from the City of Paderborn in Eastern Westphalia have hammered out an album that retains their signature HM-2 chainsaw guitar sound and also maintains their unapologetic love for melodic death metal of the Swedish kind. "Defiance" also marks another step in the careful but steady evolution of their sound by adding a black passage here and a doom-spiced moment there to their old school sound. The result is an overall much more atmospheric album, which perfectly suits its lyrical concept. The album is directly inspired by the renowned "His Dark Materials" trilogy of books by English author Sir Philip Pullman. The lyrics revolve on a deeper level of meaning around humanity's emancipation from oppression by religion. When NIGHTBEARER were formed by vocalist Michael Torka and guitarist Dominik Hellmuth in 2017, they were driven by a fervent love for old school death metal and its golden age in the glorious 1990s. Following the 5-track EP "Stories from Beyond" (2018), their debut full-length album "Tales of Sorcery and Death" (2019) immediately scored a top ten position (#8) in the soundcheck of Germany Rock Hard magazine amid general critical acclaim. With their sophomore studio album "Ghosts of a Darkness to Come" (2022), NIGHTBEARER expanded their lyrical themes to conceptual size by taking their listeners on a journey into the dark events of Robert Jordan's epic saga 'The Wheel of Time'. With their third and most complete full-length to date, NIGHTBEARER display a perfect sense of timing by offering the world a death metal act of "Defiance" based on the "His Dark Materials" trilogy!
The album's ten songs each represent a chapter filled with one or more of humanity's failures such as delusion, greed, destruction, and war. The German death metal veterans deliver an honest reckoning with the current state of the world – brutal, unfiltered, and unforgiving. "Abysmal Void" continues the dark thematic journey that began in 2020 with "Descent" and found its continuation throughout the band's latest album "Interment of Sins" (2023). Musically, NEW WORLD DEPRESSION stay on track and true to their old school death metal roots, yet "Abysmal Void" received a healthy dose of more groove, more atmosphere, and more depth. Sound-smith Jörg Uken has honed the album to perfection at his famous Soundlodge Studio in East Frisia, which enjoys an excellent reputation in death metal circles and beyond. NEW WORLD DEPRESSION were founded in the historic Münsterland, to the north of the more famous Ruhr Area and with the once powerful bishopric and medieval city of Münster at its centre, in the year 2005. The Germans started out with a more death'n'roll sound on the debut EP "The Last Step of Evolution" (2005) as their first public sign of life, which was followed by the full-length "Unseal Pandora's Curse" (2008). During their early development, NEW WORLD DEPRESSION began to shift gradually towards old school death metal by taking inspiration from bands such as ASPHYX, BOLT THROWER, and OBITUARY. With the release of "Decent" in 2020, the Germans finally opted for a professional production and label. NEW WORLD DEPRESSION take humanity to the edge of the abyss with all the musical expertise gained from many years of experience both live and in studio. Just remember, if you listen hard to the brutal death metal inferno of "Abysmal Void", the abyss might also become aware of you!
Their aggressive take on the early stages of death metal blends sheer aggression with morbid melodies, and though we're talking about classic old school death metal, the band does not limit itself to a certain style or regional sound, but creates their own mixture out of classic as well as newer influences of the genre. „Osseous Sarcophagus“ is a compilation of rare non-album tracks, taken from the „Descend“ EP, the „Festering Presence“ EP and the „Sinister Congregation“ split with Gravehammer. It's the first time that these songs are compiled on a single release - this is classic death metal to drag you into the depths of the tomb.
The album was released with nine brand-new songs on July 23rd 2021 via Testimony Records. The band's third album was of course recorded and produced once again by the band's drummer Jörg Uken in his Soundlodge Studio in Rhauderfehn, Germany.

"Despite the two extremely strong previous albums, we managed to pack a few more bits on top! 'Hades Unleashed' definitely contains our strongest material so far", says Markus Bünnemeyer, guitarist of the North German Death Metallers. "The album keeps what our name promises - even if we experiment more within the genre boundaries than on the previous albums. We have written the fastest songs of our career so far and slowed down the pace significantly on some of the other songs. All in all, the listener gets a fat piece of Old-School Death Metal, seasoned with a good portion of eighties thrash."

The lyrics, once again written by band friend Frank Albers, deal conceptually with ancient, mainly Greek, myths. The congenial cover artwork was designed by the Italian artist Paolo Girardi and perfectly reflects the mood of the album.
Songs in the spirit of old Death Metal heroes like Death, Benediction, Pestilence, Morgoth etc. should be created. Together with his school friend Frank Albers he developed a concept for the project Temple of Dread. Bünnemeyer started composing songs and Albers wrote the lyrics.

In 2018 the first songs were worked on. The music clearly pays homage to fast old school Death Metal, but a very own style emerged. On the one hand this might be due to Bünnemeyer's special residence - the North Sea island Spiekeroog - the islanders are usually said to have a mind of their own. On the other hand, it is also due to the creativity arisen from many years of experience.

The lyrics of Temple of Dread are also remarkable. Albers - psychologist and extreme metal aficionado - writes about the generally threatening, suffering and human abysses. However, he writes his lyrics in a way a little untypical for Death Metal and seasons them with portions of dark black humour.

After the main features of the first songs were finished, the search for a drummer and a vocalist began. The quality of the song material convinced Jörg Uken (drums, Soundlodge Studios, Slaughterday, ex-Stormwarrior, ex-Rumble Militia and many more) and Jens Finger (guitarist of Slaughterday, ex-Obscenity), who wanted to contribute the vocals, immediately.

The songs of the first album "Blood Craving Mantras" were recorded and mixed at Uken's Soundlodge studio in East Frisia (Germany) in winter 2018/2019. The results emthralled everyone involved in such a way that it became clear instantly that Bünnemeyer's project had to become more. The band Temple of Dread was born.
RATS OF GOMORRAH unleash their debut full-length "Infectious Vermin" onto a horrified world. If the image of a malicious horde of rats does not give you the creeps, maybe the fact that "Infectious Vermin" is the result of the German duo's frustration with the metal scene and its reluctance to any change does. No worries, although RATS OF GOMORRAH are averse to simply regurgitating all the tired clichés of an average death metal album, they have not completely abandoned that ship. They just took some detours into heavy and speed metal territory, kept vocal pitching varied, and added some hot spices such as crust-infused riffs and catchy choruses. RATS OF GOMORRAH are one of those bands that have a much longer story behind them than their emergence under that name suggests. Strictly speaking the German duo only crawled out of their hole with a new rodent moniker in 2023. Yet they also started out with over a decade of death metal experience under their pelt. Guitarist and vocalist Daniel Stelling and Moritz Paulsen on drums had already been a part of the internationally active Northern German death metal trio DIVIDE since 2009, which had become a duo in 2016. Hopefully, by now there is an itchy feeling on your skin, and rustling noises from behind your walls, while a sense of dread and panic is spreading. The best antidote: blast "Infectious Vermin" on ten – and never a rat will you ever see more. Well, maybe a neighbour or four knocking on your door. So what?! Tell them all that RATS OF GOMORRAH rule supreme!
Along with drummer/producer Jörg Uken (Soundlodge Studios) and vocalist Jens Finger (Slaughterday) the first full-length album "Blood Craving Mantras" was already recorded in late 2018 and released in 2019 on Testimony Records.

Driven by the enthusiastic feedback on the debut album, Temple of Dread started working on new songs immediately: The new album "World Sacrifice" was first released on July 24th 2020 and its name says it all! It contains eight new brain-drilling and head-splitting songs as well as a cover version of the Morgoth classic 'Sold Baptism'.

"Of course, the music still pays homage to fast old school Death Metal, but you can recognize a development", says Bünnemeyer. "We've put a lot of small changes, experiments and improvements to the new songs. Jens and Jörg have made a big contribution to the songwriting. The album takes no prisoners and it will kick your ass from the first note to the last!"
This EP should therefore be regarded as a crushing interlude between two albums rather than a foretaste of brutal things to come on their next full-length. SLAUGHTERDAY were formed in the East Frisian city of Leer in 2010. The original and still remaining core duo consists of string-shredder Jens Finger, who served as the guitarist of Oldenburgian death metal legends OBSCENITY from 1994 until 2010 and is also the growler of new label mates TEMPLE OF DREAD. The other half of the duo is personified by vocalist and drummer Bernd Reiners, who has also lent his voice to Aurich based death thrashers BK 49 among other acts. From the start, SLAUGHTERDAY have channelled the raw, morbid spirit of such old school giants as AUTOPSY, DEATH, and MASSACRE. Yet while they always deliver crushing riffs and brutal pounding, these Germans come with captivating choruses and haunting melodies that set them apart from many of their deadly peers. While we patiently await new horrors and more brutal madness, SLAUGHTERDAY take a short but fun detour by paying homage to the Giants of Grind!
With "Quantifying Cosmic Doom", SOULBURN renew the dark pact with their loyal following of delivering extreme and harsh metal that always pushes to new frontiers while staying true to its core values of black, death, and doom. Built upon a solid foundation of death metal, "Quantifying Cosmic Doom" seamlessly adds walls of melancholy that are chiselled out of doom bedrock and crowns towering riffs with the fierce and spiritual flames of black metal. A wide range of musical variability as well as the masterful storytelling that runs like a golden thread through the epic songs give SOULBURN away as experienced veterans who are utterly confident and passionate about their extreme craft. SOULBURN rose from the ashes of ASPHYX in 1996, one of the times when the Dutch death metal pioneers fell apart before reuniting sooner or later. Their acclaimed debut album "Feeding on Angels" (1998) doubled up as a statement of musical intent as it contained a stripped down but deadly concoction of doom-laden black metal, which quickly established them as a devastating musical force. Behind the fifth SOULBURN album, "Quantifying Cosmic Doom", lies a long journey that never followed a straightforward road but travelled through many dimensions and took hidden paths. Yet the Dutch metal extremists have undeniably reached a dark and beautiful peak.
With their fourth album "Cosmocrator", KHNVM are entering a downward spiral into the abyss of the human experience. The death metal brainiacs explore the crossroads of psychology, philosophy, and spirituality. The album title "Cosmocrator" carries a dual significance. It symbolises the "Ruler of the World" and, within religious vocabulary, also stands for "Satan". This reflects the album's exploration of common phenomena, expressed through an adrenaline-fueled artistic lens. With the thought-provoking lyrics and harsh yet to the point musicality of "Cosmocrator", KHNVM promise not to just deliver on musical terms but also to captivate those who are drawn to complex narratives and philosophical depth. KHNVM are a death metal band that has walked the line between old school death metal and contemporary influences without stumbling. Fronted by Bangladeshi-born guitarist and vocalist Obliterator, the band was founded and is firmly based in Germany. When KHNVM entered the scene with their debut album "Foretold Monuments of Flesh" on Testimony Records in 2019, they were immediately met with acclaim both from critics and fans alike. In the wake of the second album, "Portals to Oblivion" (2021), KHNVM began to perform live. Meanwhile, KHNVM have toured, entered stages at many festivals, and played headliner and support shows across Europe. With "Cosmocrator", KHNVM offer a dual approach: The easy way is to enjoy the album simply for its outstanding musical merit. Yet there is also the far more winding path to take with its intricate lyrics and rich thoughts to be analysed, explored, and discussed for many years to come - and new meanings to be found as well as discoveries of fresh ideas to be made with each new turn!
