What is best in death metal? Cool riffs and awesome vocals. Pounding drums and lyrics about horror movies. With their sophomore full-length, "Those of the Morbid", LEPER COLONOY deliver exactly what any adherent of classic death metal craves. This is hardly a surprise, given the scene icons behind this international act: LEPER COLONY came out of the wedding of German and Swedish death metal styles with classic American influences. This happened, when German vocalist Marc Grewe and Swedish guitarist Rogga Johansson decided to expand their friendship of many years and mutual love for old school death metal into creating an album together in 2020. The duo enlisted CONSUMPTION drummer Jon Skäre and lead-guitarist Kjetil Lyngahug (PAGANIZER) to record their self-titled debut album, which was released in 2023. The record was well received by critics and fans alike as it was obviously not just another 'super project', but a congregation of die-hard death metal fanatics coming up with a host of fresh ideas. German vocalist Marc Grewe has long-established his name as the former frontman of MORGOTH, and later with INSIDIOUS DISEASE as well as with the band ASINHELL. Guitarist and bass player Rogga Johansson has left a massive mark on Swedish death metal in a host of bands including PAGANIZER, RIBSPREADER, and REVOLTING. WOMBBATH guitarist Håkan Stuvemark has taken over lead guitar as a new member and he was joined by British drummer Jon Rudin, who is well-known from MONSTROUS and DEAD SUN among several other death metal acts. With "Those of the Morbid", LEPER COLONOY give old school death metal fanatics the very brutal and uncompromising album that they have been waiting for!

Death metal can hardly get more dedicated and passionate about the old school Floridian sound than TEMPLE OF DREAD on their fifth album "God of the Godless". Luckily, the East Frisians from German island Spiekeroog are not mired in a swamp of stale nostalgia. Although "God of the Godless" comes with the brutal power of harsh winter storms and the gritty texture of the often fierce North Sea weather, the East Frisians have also refined the cinematic aspects of their sound that they had firmly established on the predecessor "Beyond Acheron" (2023). Building on their brutal death metal base, TEMPLE OF DREAD also work with dark and heavy parts as well as a surprising dash of melancholia – and even some knife-tips of black metal spice. There is even a return of a guest-contribution by former MORGOTH, INSIDIOUS DISEASE, and ASINHELL vocalist Marc Grewe. The massive production of "God of the Godless" comes courtesy of drummer Jörg Uken, who owns and runs the renowned death metal smithy Soundlodge Tonstudio, in which leading acts of the scene such as DEW-SCENTED, GOD DETHRONED, OBSCENITY, SUICIDAL ANGELS, and WARPATH among many others have also recorded albums. TEMPLE OF DREAD came into being on Spiekeroog in 2017 when guitarist Markus Bünnemeyer decided to materialise his craving for old school death metal. In 2018, he was joined by singer Jens Finger and drummer Jörg Uken, with both of whom Bünnemeyer was also active in SLAUGHTERDAY. The three-piece has maintained a stable line-up ever since. Their first full-length "Blood Craving Mantras" (2019) was an immediate success in death metal circles and the hard working trio has proved extremely creative with "World Sacrifice" (2020) and the critically acclaimed "Hades Unleashed" (2021) following in rapid succession. While "Beyond Acheron" (2023) took a little longer, TEMPLE OF DREAD are now back on the fast track. Even better, the East Frisians have decided that it is time to leave their island and go raiding the rest of the world by performing live. CARNAL TOMB from Germany's chaotic and vibrant capital city Berlin deliver their eagerly awaited third album, which is entitled "Embalmed in Decay" and perfectly channels the spirit of old school death metal. Slightly shorter tracks, fast forward blast beats, and their characteristic doom-driven passages all add up to a contemporary version of classic death metal that will cement the German's status as one of the hottest young acts of this most brutal genre. CARNAL TOMB took inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft as well as gore and zombie movies such as Amando de Ossorio's 1972 genre classic "Tombs of the Blind Dead", and old Italian funeral places called 'putridarium', in which the corpses of the deceased were left to rot. These themes have also inspired the morbid cover artwork of "Embalmed in Decay" by the artist Skaðvaldur. TEMPLE OF DREAD stay true to their old school course on the fourth full-length "Beyond Acheron". At the same time, the East Frisians have added more dark and heavy parts as well as a healthy dash of melancholic feeling – and even black metal inspired moments. Guest-contributions by former MORGOTH and INSIDIOUS DISEASE vocalist Marc Grewe and GOD DETHRONED's Henri Sattler add a spicy extra. Lyrically, the band's friend and word-smith, psychologist Frank Albers, has again delivered intelligent gory texts that revolve around antique myth and history featuring protagonists such as Icarus, Vulcan, Hades, Cleopatra, and Marcus Antonius. This is also reflected in the cover artwork of "Beyond Acheron", which has been created by celebrated Italian artist Paolo Girardi and depicts Charon, the ferryman of the Greek underworld Hades. The massive production of "Beyond Acheron" comes courtesy of TEMPLE OF DREAD drummer Jörg Uken and his Soundlodge Tonstudio, where among many other acts DEW-SCENTED, GOD DETHRONED, OBSCENITY, SUICIDAL ANGELS, and WARPATH have previously recorded albums. SCALPTURE deliver their fourth album "Landkrieg", which means 'land warfare' in German, with deadly precision and an ambitious mission statement: to conquer the world. SODOMISERY are spinning a dark lyrical yarn about mental illness in society, religion and the struggle of the individual on their sophomore full-length "Mazzaroth. The Swedish melodic death four-piece are underlining their loosely conceptual approach with a remarkable musical evolution that expands their original sound based on the power and precision of death metal with the frenzied and cold aggression of black metal. SODOMISERY have added a layer of dramatic depth by including keyboards, which is hardly surprising as the Swedes count DIMMU BORGIR, CRADLE OF FILTH, and CHILDREN OF BODOM among their major sources of inspiration. After the previous albums "Blood Craving Mantras" and "World Sacrifice", which were acclaimed by critics and fans, Temple of Dread complete their opening triple with the new hateful chunk "Hades Unleashed". The album was released with nine brand-new songs on July 23rd 2021 via Testimony Records. The band's third album was of course recorded and produced once again by the band's drummer Jörg Uken in his Soundlodge Studio in Rhauderfehn, Germany.

"Despite the two extremely strong previous albums, we managed to pack a few more bits on top! 'Hades Unleashed' definitely contains our strongest material so far", says Markus Bünnemeyer, guitarist of the North German Death Metallers. "The album keeps what our name promises - even if we experiment more within the genre boundaries than on the previous albums. We have written the fastest songs of our career so far and slowed down the pace significantly on some of the other songs. All in all, the listener gets a fat piece of Old-School Death Metal, seasoned with a good portion of eighties thrash."

The lyrics, once again written by band friend Frank Albers, deal conceptually with ancient, mainly Greek, myths. The congenial cover artwork was designed by the Italian artist Paolo Girardi and perfectly reflects the mood of the album.

In 2017, guitarist/bassist Markus Bünnemeyer decided to use his many years of experience as an active musician (e.g. Thrashhammer, Slaughterday) and metal fan to start a new Death Metal band. Songs in the spirit of old Death Metal heroes like Death, Benediction, Pestilence, Morgoth etc. should be created. Together with his school friend Frank Albers he developed a concept for the project Temple of Dread. Bünnemeyer started composing songs and Albers wrote the lyrics.

In 2018 the first songs were worked on. The music clearly pays homage to fast old school Death Metal, but a very own style emerged. On the one hand this might be due to Bünnemeyer's special residence - the North Sea island Spiekeroog - the islanders are usually said to have a mind of their own. On the other hand, it is also due to the creativity arisen from many years of experience.

The lyrics of Temple of Dread are also remarkable. Albers - psychologist and extreme metal aficionado - writes about the generally threatening, suffering and human abysses. However, he writes his lyrics in a way a little untypical for Death Metal and seasons them with portions of dark black humour.

After the main features of the first songs were finished, the search for a drummer and a vocalist began. The quality of the song material convinced Jörg Uken (drums, Soundlodge Studios, Slaughterday, ex-Stormwarrior, ex-Rumble Militia and many more) and Jens Finger (guitarist of Slaughterday, ex-Obscenity), who wanted to contribute the vocals, immediately.

The songs of the first album "Blood Craving Mantras" were recorded and mixed at Uken's Soundlodge studio in East Frisia (Germany) in winter 2018/2019. The results emthralled everyone involved in such a way that it became clear instantly that Bünnemeyer's project had to become more. The band Temple of Dread was born.

Here they come: a crawling, sprawling, gnawing mass of vicious rodents on a rampage. RATS OF GOMORRAH unleash their debut full-length "Infectious Vermin" onto a horrified world. If the image of a malicious horde of rats does not give you the creeps, maybe the fact that "Infectious Vermin" is the result of the German duo's frustration with the metal scene and its reluctance to any change does. No worries, although RATS OF GOMORRAH are averse to simply regurgitating all the tired clichés of an average death metal album, they have not completely abandoned that ship. They just took some detours into heavy and speed metal territory, kept vocal pitching varied, and added some hot spices such as crust-infused riffs and catchy choruses. RATS OF GOMORRAH are one of those bands that have a much longer story behind them than their emergence under that name suggests. Strictly speaking the German duo only crawled out of their hole with a new rodent moniker in 2023. Yet they also started out with over a decade of death metal experience under their pelt. Guitarist and vocalist Daniel Stelling and Moritz Paulsen on drums had already been a part of the internationally active Northern German death metal trio DIVIDE since 2009, which had become a duo in 2016. Hopefully, by now there is an itchy feeling on your skin, and rustling noises from behind your walls, while a sense of dread and panic is spreading. The best antidote: blast "Infectious Vermin" on ten – and never a rat will you ever see more. Well, maybe a neighbour or four knocking on your door. So what?! Tell them all that RATS OF GOMORRAH rule supreme!

Temple Of Dread - World Sacrifice from 9.59 $

The north German Death Metal Band Temple of Dread was spawn in 2017 by guitarist/bassist Markus Bünnemeyer and his school friend Frank Albers (lyrics). Along with drummer/producer Jörg Uken (Soundlodge Studios) and vocalist Jens Finger (Slaughterday) the first full-length album "Blood Craving Mantras" was already recorded in late 2018 and released in 2019 on Testimony Records.

Driven by the enthusiastic feedback on the debut album, Temple of Dread started working on new songs immediately: The new album "World Sacrifice" was first released on July 24th 2020 and its name says it all! It contains eight new brain-drilling and head-splitting songs as well as a cover version of the Morgoth classic 'Sold Baptism'.

"Of course, the music still pays homage to fast old school Death Metal, but you can recognize a development", says Bünnemeyer. "We've put a lot of small changes, experiments and improvements to the new songs. Jens and Jörg have made a big contribution to the songwriting. The album takes no prisoners and it will kick your ass from the first note to the last!"

On their "Terrified" EP, death metal aficionados SLAUGHTERDAY deliver four short sharp chops as a tribute to the early pioneers of grindcore. This EP should therefore be regarded as a crushing interlude between two albums rather than a foretaste of brutal things to come on their next full-length. SLAUGHTERDAY were formed in the East Frisian city of Leer in 2010. The original and still remaining core duo consists of string-shredder Jens Finger, who served as the guitarist of Oldenburgian death metal legends OBSCENITY from 1994 until 2010 and is also the growler of new label mates TEMPLE OF DREAD. The other half of the duo is personified by vocalist and drummer Bernd Reiners, who has also lent his voice to Aurich based death thrashers BK 49 among other acts. From the start, SLAUGHTERDAY have channelled the raw, morbid spirit of such old school giants as AUTOPSY, DEATH, and MASSACRE. Yet while they always deliver crushing riffs and brutal pounding, these Germans come with captivating choruses and haunting melodies that set them apart from many of their deadly peers. While we patiently await new horrors and more brutal madness, SLAUGHTERDAY take a short but fun detour by paying homage to the Giants of Grind!
